A Warm Up for the Big One!

Another weekend, another huge varsity tournament at Seneca College.  This weekend we host eight of the nation's best collegiate men's volleyball squads as part of the 2011 Seneca Sting Men's Volleyball Challenge here at Newnham Campus Gymnasium.

I call this a warm-up because in February, we host the 2011 OCAA Men's Volleyball Championship (Feb. 24-26, 2011), and this being my first-year as Sports Information and Promotions Coordinator, naturally, the challenge seems daunting.

But we've got a great team here in Athletics and Recreation with a wealth of experience and I know we'll support one another through the intensive planning and execution of the event.

We hope to have a ton of support from the Senecan community but we've got to get the word out and lure additional sponsors.  Know any companies that might be interested?

This weekend's volleyball tournament is our second run at live webcasting with full coverage available here:

Give it up for the Girls

Preparations are underway here at Seneca College's Newnham Campus for the 32nd Annual Seneca Sting Women’s Basketball Classic Tournament happening this weekend (Fri. Jan. 7 to Sat. Jan. 8).

We're pretty pumped because we've got eight great teams participating from across the country.

Those teams are: The Humber College Hawks (Toronto), Sheridan College Bruins (Oakville, Ont.), Fanshawe College Falcons (London, Ont.), Vanier College Cheetahs (Montreal), Dawson College Blues (Montreal), Champlain Regional College Lions (Quebec City), Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves (Grande Prairie, AB) and, us, the Seneca Sting (Toronto).

Below is the tournament draw:

What I'm personally most excited about, as a bit of a tech nerd, is the makeshift webcast we're mounting here, live from the gymnasium.  No play-by-play, no on-court microphones, just a digital camera, a tripod and a laptop.

Checkout the LIVE FEED here: http://ow.ly/3zD2f or via www.SenecaSting.ca

If you're a Canadian hoops fan, you'll also be getting great coverage via social media:

I'll be offering updates on Twitter: www.Twitter.com/SenecaSting

On Facebook: http://ow.ly/3rZS2 or via www.Facebook.com/SammySting

With videos posted on www.YouTube.com/TheSenecaSting

I just distributed a media release about the tournament and a few local publications have already expressed interest in covering us.

It should be sweet!

See you at the gymnasium!

Best,

A New Year...Renewed Passion for Excellence!

A sample of the Campus Recreation activities available to Seneca College students.

Varsity tryout information for interested Seneca students.

Hi All,

Welcome to 2011 and welcome to the start of an exciting new Winter Semester at Seneca College.  We'd also like to welcome you to the brand new Seneca Sting Blog - a place, on the web, where the Senecan community can interact with and discuss news and happenings from the Athletics and Recreation team at their college.

With the start of a new year comes renewed enthusiasm regarding the role of Athletics and Recreation at Canada's largest college.  Our team is constantly endeavouring to deliver vital student services to the Senecan community in the most effective and engaging of ways.

An incredible stat hit my desk in December 2010, just before the holidays.  The stat read that more than 30,000 individuals used the services of Athletics and Recreation at Seneca College in 2010 alone.  That number speaks to the thousands in our college and local community who use our fitness facilities, participate in varsity sports and enjoy our campus recreation activities.  With so many people reliant on the services we provide, our role in the community has never been more important.

And in 2011, the steps towards growth in the services and facilities being offered to our community will begin to take shape.  Funds for new and improved facilities, increased presence on the web, social media and throughout the college will mean more access to information about the services we provide, greater integration with other collegiate departments means students will have the opportunity to learn and contribute to their college community, and from a varsity sports perspective - February 24-26, 2011, Seneca College Newnham Campus will proudly play host to the 2011 OCAA Men's Volleyball Championship as our Sting Men go for gold on home turf!

As mentioned, it's a new year, and Seneca is ready to make its mark.

Will you be here in 2011?  What would you like to see from us?  Let us know!
